6/3/2015 - Fallout 4 confirmed!
With the release of the Fallout 4 official trailer from Bethesda Softworks, we can officially say that Fallout 4 is confirmed.
We can also confirm our information from back in 2013 that Fallout 4 will be taking place in Boston. As you can see from the above image which is a screenshot from the trailer, "Scollay Square" is what a sign reads which is a place located in Boston.
"Scollay Square (c. 1838-1962) was a vibrant city square in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. It was named for William Scollay, a prominent local developer and militia officer who bought a landmark four-story merchant building at the intersection of Cambridge and Court Streets in 1795. Local citizens began to refer to the intersection as Scollay's Square, and, in 1838, the city officially memorialized the intersection as Scollay Square. Early on, the area was a busy center of commerce, including daguerreotypist (photographer) Josiah Johnson Hawes (1808–1901) and Dr. William Thomas Green Morton, the first dentist to use ether as an anaesthetic."
Fallout 4 Information
1. The game will take place in Boston, Massachusetts and will pick up from where Fallout 3 ended with a few of the same factions returning.
The following are some pictures of Boston in the 1950's which as we know is the time period for Fallout. Although the game takes place way in the future, we all know that the atmosphere, theme, style, culture, music, and everything else is based in the 1950's and before. Remember, in the first Fallout, the game was actually based in the 1950's and the "Great War" was during that time, not in 2077 like in Fallout 3. With that being said, the following pictures are of Boston in the 1950's. So imagine the following pictures with a nuclear fallout atmosphere like in Fallout 3. That should give the individual a good understanding of how the environment in Fallout 4 will be.
2. "The Institute" (MIT) will be the major area of the game. As The Mall was the capital of Fallout 3, and the New Vegas Strip the capital of Fallout New Vegas, The Institute which will be the MIT College, will be the major area or downtown district of Fallout 4. While the game will stick with the 1950's nuclear apocalypse theme, Boston will be quite different from any previous Fallout. Fallout 4 will drift more towards a cyberpunk theme with an enhanced retro futuristic theme as well. If anyone has ever played the game BioShock, it will be a bit like that. The Institute will be somewhat like the Old World Blues dlc from Fallout New Vegas where things are very technological and scientific however the college will be the center point of the game as iv'e said. So instead of being abandoned like Old World Blues, it will be populated and the player will have plenty of opportunities to interact with other CPU's and do quests. The following are present day pictures of MIT, along with examples of cyperpunk themes so that you get the feel for how Fallout 4 will be like.
Cyberpunk theme below. Keep in mind that the game will not look exactly like the pictures you see below, but Fallout 4 will certainly be drifting a bit towards this type of theme as previously stated.
3. Androids will play a major part in Fallout 4. The railroad from Fallout 3 will be a faction and the enemies of the railroad are "The Plantation". This group will be pro-slavery when it comes to androids, making them work on a farm so that humans can get food. As previously stated, The Institute will be much like a technological advanced hub similar to Old World Blues in Fallout New Vegas with top scientists working with these androids.
4. Super Mutants and the Brotherhood of Steel will not be in Fallout 4 or will be very irrelevant. It is 90% likely that they will not be in the game at all and if they are, they will be very minute and have no importance. There will be little to no quests which the player can do for these factions, and the player will have hardly any interaction with these factions if they are even implemented into the game, which is likely that they won't be. Bethesda does not want these factions in Fallout 4 at all, and will likely be making a whole new type of creature/race which will be native to Boston. They want to move towards lovecraftation themed creatures to be in the game instead of previous Fallout creatures and enemies. So we can expect to see new mutated enemies in Fallout 4 that will look very similar to the pictures below.
The above images are just examples of lovecraftnation themed creatures, which Bethesda will be moving towards and implementing into the game. This doesn't mean that the above creatures is what you're going to see in Fallout 4, but just examples of how monsters / creatures will look.
5. The map will be much bigger than both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. Below you will see first the Fallout 3 in-game map, then the real version of the map from Google Earth. The same for Fallout New Vegas, and then you will see how big Fallout 4's map will be. Keep in mind that the real version of the maps from Google Earth aren't exact in size or location, but are pretty close. Also keep in mind that these are present day pictures of the areas and the game's version only has about 1/20 of everything the real version has. This is because of 3 reasons: Time in the game stops in the 1950's, so only buildings and artifacts that existed back then are present. | The bombs destroyed a large majority of previously existing buildings and artifacts. | The game developers were simply too lazy to recreate every single building and artifact in the city. (Which is quite understandable).

Now for Fallout 4's map. Keep in mind that Bethesda may do what they did with both Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 3 and shrink everything in size. However it is likely we may see the actual map be the same size as the in-game map. It is almost certain that not all the buildings and artifacts you see in the map below will be in the game. So don't get too excited thinking you're going to be able to explore all these places. Expect to see only 1/20 of the buildings and artifacts below to be in the actual game. However, there will be more buildings, places of interest, and places to go in and explore than both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas combined.
So as you can see, the map is huge with nearly all of Boston being in it. It is very likely that Bethesda will shrink everything as they did in Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Expect to see much of the city and outer suburbs replaced by wasteland with only a few locations to explore in between. As previously stated, expect to only see 1/20 of the buildings and city you see above in the actual game. Regardless, the map is still very big and will be bigger than both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas combined. While it would be very nice to see a lot of the buildings and city we see above in the actual game, it is likely it will not happen. To design everything would take extremely long and exploring everything would take just as long for the player. Much of the city and outer suburbs will be ruins and wasteland with just a few points of interest. If Bethesda did indeed make the map as big as it is above, without any shrinkage or reductions, it will be about 15x the size of Fallout 3's map and will be similar to L.A Noire's map. If anyone has ever played that game, you know the map is huge - map below.
Another thing to note about the Fallout 4 map is where the player will start off when they first play. In Fallout 3, the player started in Vault 101 and in Fallout New Vegas, they started in Goodsprings. Bethesda will be starting the player off very far away from MIT and the downtown Boston area. They do not want to make it easy for the player to get there, and they want the player to have already done a lot of quests and already be leveled up before they get there. Bethesda did this with both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas making it very hard for the player to get to the main points of interest earlier on in the game. In Fallout 3 the player had to fight super mutants in the downtown D.C area before going through long underground metro tunnels infested with ghouls before they arrived at the mall. In Fallout New Vegas, the only way for the player to get to New Vegas was by going all the was south towards Primm, then head east for a while before taking a long trip north into New Vegas. Any other way was nearly impossible with deathclaws, cazardors, and other enemies making it extremely hard to get through. We are going to see the same thing in Fallout 4. The player will start very far away from the main point of interest (MIT) and will have to face a lot of difficult obstacles before going there. The map being so huge is already one obstacle. It will be a long treacherous journey just walking there plus you will have to be facing new enemies and creatures along with other obstacles. One thing that can be said is that the player will not be able to get to MIT or the downtown Boston area early on in the game. There will probably be no underground metro tunnels to get into the city either and you will likely have the freedom to stay above ground when traveling into the city. This is because Bethesda received a lot of complaints from Fallout 3 about the underground metro's being the only way into the mall and certain points of downtown D.C. Below are the 2 likely places that the player will start off.
6. It should be obvious already, but Fallout 4 will not be coming out on the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles. Yes, it will probably be available for those consoles but Fallout 4 will be released for the next generation consoles: Xbox One and PS4.
7. Fallout 4 will likely not be called Fallout 4. This is just what we are all calling it because we do not know what the real name for the game will be. Calling it Fallout 4 would be invalid since Fallout New Vegas is the 4th Fallout. It will likely be called Fallout and then some title.
8. Fallout 4 will not be announced for some time. Bethesda is still looking around Boston for ideas to add into the game and may not have even started on the game, or are very early into it. We can expect to see Fallout 4 be announced in 2015 or 2016.
9. Many people were upset in both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas at the fact that after you beat the game, you couldn't play it anymore. This will not be the same for Fallout 4 and the player will be able to continue playing even after they beat the game's story.
